The History of Stone Veneer

Stone is one of the oldest materials used to build a house and other structures. While other more modern materials like vinyl took over, stone is still loved by many homeowners who want a unique and historic looking home. Stone veneer has a deeper history than one may think, getting it’s start in the early 19th century as thin stone veneer. Get to know the history of stone veneer and how enVision Stone is taking that history and improving upon it. The stone veneer that is being used in today’s industry is easier to install, saves money, and takes less time due to a quicker installation process.

The very beginnings of stone veneer can be found in the Roman Empire. The Coliseum had signs of veneer being used. There are holes in the structure that were used to hold up veneer panels. The Segovia aqueduct in Spain was also used with stone blocks. Installing stone veneer was originally done by hand, tooling thick portions into the panel. They were made using granite, marble, travertine, limestone, and slate. At this point, the stone veneer could only be used on the inside of structures or if they were on the outside, it was just on the first floor.

The next improvement of stone veneer can be seen from the 1930s. The common thickness of the veneer was one and a half inches. Installation was still rather difficult, being done with mortar and steel rods drilled into the panel to add support. In the 1940s, full stone facades were being installed rather than just the inside of structures. They were also becoming more popular because it was becoming easier for stone to be transported from place to place. This saved companies money as well. Over time, a method of attaching stone veneer to steel was developed. The mortar technique was also replaced with an elastomeric sealant.

natural stone veneerIn the 1960s, stone veneer was becoming thinner and safer to install. Concrete was being used in the development of stone veneer to prevent bowing, cracking, and staining. By the 1980s, the stone could be cut at ⅛ inch and will continue becoming thinner.

An important distinction between this stone veneer and the spray stone that is developed by enVision Stone, is that enVision Stone is sprayed onto an existing structure. The stone veneer that has been used in the past are solid pieces of stone placed onto a frame. With the innovative production of real stone veneer from enVision Stone, unique designs, colors, and shapes can be made using real, natural stone. Installation of real stone veneer is done by spraying on the stone to an existing surface, horizontal or vertical. If a homeowner or business owner wants a renovation done, it can be completed without demolition and in a style of their choice. enVision Stone’s lightweight stone veneer is strong, mold-resistant, and high-quality.

Lightweight

Stone, no matter the form, is a heavy material and needs to be supported on vertical surfaces. In the past, there needed to be holes drilled in the existing structure for the stone veneer to be placed on top of. With enVision Stone’s lightweight, spray-on stone, the product can be sprayed onto surfaces with no worry of causing harm to the integrity of the structure. The weight of the real stone material also allows the product to be installed on surfaces high above the ground, including exterior siding for homes, interior walls, and even ceilings.

Easy to apply

Stone Veneer was typically one large piece of stone that was cut thinly and applied to various structures as a facade. enVision Stone had the forethought to manufacture a material that could be sprayed onto the surface, making installation easier and quicker. With future improvements to technology, our real stone product will only become thinner and faster to apply.

Installing stone on vertical or horizontal surfaces or ceilings requires mixing mortar and covering the existing structure before applying the stone. This makes projects challenging and time-consuming. With enVision Stone, when real stone veneer can be added to any structure by directly spraying the material onto the surface, the completion time is significantly cut down. Walkways can be transformed, feature walls can be added, and fireplaces can be renovated with ease.

Affordable

Because installation was time-consuming and materials and labor were expensive, when renovations included adding stone veneer to a surface, it added a significant amount to the overall cost. With the innovative product from enVision Stone was manufactured, it created an opportunity for quicker installation and materials that are less expensive.

Whether you are a contractor, architect, business or homeowner, real stone veneer should be your first choice for a unique design that adds style to any building or home. enVision Stone strives to continue developing increasingly effective and beautiful real stone materials.
